Monstera pertusum

Care guide

Monstera pertusum

Meet the climbing cousin of the classic Monstera deliciosa. Known internally at our nursery as Monstera pertusum, this vigorous grower has been carefully selected and propagated from our own mother plants — chosen for their elegant leaf shape, faster growth, and strong aerial rooting.

While not botanically distinct from Monstera deliciosa, this selection behaves noticeably differently: the internodes are longer, the leaves more elongated, and the climbing habit more pronounced — especially when given support early on.

As the plant matures, the leaves can develop impressive fenestrations and even reach the same spectacular size as those of shrub-form deliciosa plants. In the right conditions, pertusum becomes a dynamic statement plant: vertical, architectural, and endlessly rewarding to grow.

We’ve grown and selected this climbing form for years, with a focus on strong roots and balanced development. If you’re looking for a Monstera with momentum — one that reaches upward rather than spreading outward — this is the one.

Care tips

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal, but this Monstera can also adapt to medium light conditions. A spot near a north- or west-facing window usually works well. On south-facing windows, protect from direct summer sun to prevent leaf scorch.

Water

Let the soil dry out between waterings. Always use the pot lift technique — only water when the pot feels noticeably lighter. This plant prefers a dry spell over consistently moist soil.

Fertiliser

Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, gentle fertiliser. A consistent feeding schedule supports faster vertical growth and larger leaves.

Temperature

Ideal temperature range: 18–28°C. Avoid cold drafts and keep above 12°C at all times to prevent root stress.

Humidity

60% or more is preferred. Avoid misting directly on the leaves — especially if the air is cool — as water droplets can cause spotting. A pebble tray or humidifier placed nearby (not directly against the plant) works well.

Extra tip

Provide a sturdy moss pole or climbing support from an early stage. This Monstera climbs vigorously, and early support encourages symmetrical growth and well-fenestrated leaves. Regularly guide or tie the stems to help it grow upward rather than sideways.
