Philodendron Medisa

Care guide

Philodendron Medisa

Philodendron ‘Medisa’ is a uniquely vigorous and vividly coloured cultivar, grown and propagated at our own nursery. With deep red stems, bold variegation and a subtle red outline along the leaf margins, it’s a true standout — stronger and more expressive than the well-known Painted Lady.

The name ‘Medisa’ is a tribute to family: it was created by Guido Mermans, who named the plant after his children — a blend of *MErmans*, *DIrk* and *SAndra*. And like its name, this Philodendron carries a legacy of care, selection and identity.

While similar in growth habit to the Painted Lady, ‘Medisa’ sets itself apart through richer colours, more pronounced variegation, and increased resilience. Its foliage ranges from bright green to yellow marbled patterns, with a fine red edge on emerging leaves. The petioles are strikingly red — especially under strong light.

This is a light-loving Philodendron. The more light it receives, the more intense the colours become. Support it well, give it space to grow, and it will reward you with upright growth, vibrant contrast, and year-round presence.

Care tips

Light

Bright, indirect light is essential to bring out the full variegation. The more light this plant receives, the more vibrant the colours and the red-edged leaf margins become. Avoid harsh midday sun, but don’t hold back on brightness.

Water

Allow the top 3–5 cm of soil to dry before watering again. Always use the pot lift technique — water when the pot feels noticeably lighter. In lower light, reduce watering to avoid overhydration.

Fertiliser

Feed every 2–4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Consistent feeding supports both colour intensity and leaf development.

Temperature

Ideal range: 18–28°C. Avoid cold air and protect from temperatures below 12°C. This cultivar prefers warm, stable conditions for continuous growth.

Humidity

Tolerates average indoor humidity well, but will appreciate levels of 50–60% or more. Mist-free methods (like a pebble tray or ambient humidifier) are best to protect the variegated leaves.

Extra tip

Support with a moss pole or stake to encourage upright, symmetrical growth. New leaves often show the strongest colours — keep them in bright conditions to maintain that intensity over time.
