Care guide

Philodendron Medisa

Philodendron ‘Medisa’ is a striking cultivar developed and grown at our own nursery. With its vibrant green and yellow marbled foliage, deep red stems and delicate reddish leaf margins, it brings a beautiful combination of colour and character to any plant collection.

The story behind its name makes this Philodendron even more special. ‘Medisa’ was created by Guido Mermans, who named the plant after his family: ME from Mermans, DI from Dirk and SA from Sandra. A unique name for a plant with a special place in our nursery's history.

Although Philodendron ‘Medisa’ shares some similarities with the popular Painted Lady, it stands out with its rich colours, pronounced variegation and vigorous growth. Its young leaves display beautiful shades of yellow and green, while the reddish petioles add an extra touch of contrast.

This Philodendron particularly enjoys bright, indirect light, which helps bring out its beautiful colours. Give it a suitable climbing support, a little room to grow and the right care, and it will develop into an impressive tropical houseplant.

Care tips

Light

Place your Philodendron ‘Medisa’ in a bright spot with plenty of indirect light. Good lighting helps maintain its beautiful variegation and vibrant colours. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can damage the leaves.

Water

Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry before watering again. Lift the pot to check its weight: a noticeably lighter pot usually means it's time to water. Always adjust watering to the season, temperature and amount of light your plant receives.

Fertiliser

Feed every 2–4 weeks during the active growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser, following the recommended dosage. Reduce feeding when growth slows down, especially during the darker winter months.

Temperature

Philodendron ‘Medisa’ prefers warm, stable temperatures between 18–28°C. Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Keep the plant away from temperatures below 12°C.

Humidity

Philodendron ‘Medisa’ adapts well to normal indoor humidity, although it appreciates levels of around 50–60% or higher. Avoid placing it directly next to radiators or other sources of dry heat.

Extra tip

Give your Philodendron ‘Medisa’ a moss pole or other climbing support to encourage upright growth and larger leaves as it matures. Rotate the pot occasionally for balanced growth and regularly check the leaves for dust and pests.
