Few houseplants transform as dramatically over time as Monstera pertusum. What begins as a relatively simple green plant can develop into a spectacular climber with enormous, deeply fenestrated leaves that rival those of the more compact forms of Monstera deliciosa.
At Plantlovers, we have been propagating this climbing selection from our own mother plants for many years. Selected for its strong growth, elegant leaf shape and vigorous climbing habit, Monstera pertusum can develop into an impressive plant when given the right conditions and support.
Although Monstera pertusum is not botanically distinct from Monstera deliciosa, this selection has a noticeably different growth habit. Its internodes are longer, its leaves tend to be more elongated and its climbing behaviour is much more pronounced. Rather than remaining relatively compact, this Monstera naturally wants to grow upwards.
In its natural habitat, Monstera uses aerial roots to attach itself to trees and climb towards the rainforest canopy. Providing a moss pole or another suitable climbing support indoors allows the plant to follow this natural growth pattern and encourages the development of increasingly mature foliage.
As your Monstera climbs, each new leaf has the potential to become larger and develop more pronounced fenestrations: the characteristic splits and openings that make mature Monstera leaves so recognisable. So don't worry if your young plant doesn't yet resemble the enormous specimens you see online. With sufficient light, consistent support and a little patience, the transformation can be remarkable.
At our nursery, every Monstera pertusum is grown with a moss pole from an early stage, giving it the support it needs to develop its natural climbing habit.
Monstera pertusum is a plant for the long term. With the right care, it can become an impressive vertical statement plant, rewarding you with increasingly spectacular foliage as it matures.
