Care guide

Strelitzia Nicolai

With its impressive size and large, upright leaves, Strelitzia nicolai is one of the most striking architectural houseplants you can grow. Also known as the White Bird of Paradise, this species originates from southern Africa, where it can develop into a tree-like plant with enormous leaves that move gracefully in the coastal winds.

Indoors, Strelitzia nicolai brings an unmistakable tropical atmosphere to any space. Its large, paddle-shaped leaves emerge one after another, gradually creating the characteristic fan-shaped appearance for which this plant is known.

At Plantlovers, we take particular care in how our Strelitzias are grown and arranged. Instead of planting young seedlings together straight away, we first grow each plant individually until it reaches approximately 40–50 cm in height. This allows us to select plants with similar growth rates and structures before combining them into a single pot.

When grouping three, five or more plants, we use carefully considered planting patterns to create a balanced, natural appearance. For example, three plants are positioned in a triangular arrangement, allowing the foliage to develop evenly around the centre of the pot. This results in a fuller, more harmonious plant that maintains its attractive shape as it grows.

One thing worth knowing is that split leaves are completely normal for a Strelitzia. In its natural habitat, the leaves tear along their veins, allowing strong winds to pass through without causing excessive damage. These splits are not a sign of poor health, but simply part of the plant's natural character.

With plenty of light, enough space and a little patience, Strelitzia nicolai can grow into a spectacular statement plant that brings a tropical touch to your home for many years.

Care tips

Light

Strelitzia nicolai loves light! Place it in a very bright spot, ideally near a south- or west-facing window. It can tolerate some direct sunlight indoors, especially when introduced gradually. Without enough light, growth will slow down and new leaves may remain smaller.

Water

Allow the upper part of the potting soil to dry out before watering again. Lift the pot to check its weight: a noticeably lighter pot is usually a good indication that it's time to water. Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away. Strelitzia prefers a good watering followed by a drying period rather than constantly wet soil.

Fertiliser

Feed your Strelitzia every 2–4 weeks during the active growing season, using a balanced liquid fertiliser at the recommended dosage. Regular feeding supports the development of its impressive leaves and healthy growth. Reduce feeding during the darker winter months.

Temperature

Strelitzia nicolai grows best in warm conditions, ideally between 18 and 30°C. Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Protect the plant from prolonged exposure to temperatures below 10°C.

Humidity

Strelitzia nicolai adapts well to normal indoor humidity, making it suitable for most homes. Higher humidity can help prevent dry, brown leaf edges, but it is not essential for healthy growth. Avoid placing the plant directly next to radiators or other sources of dry heat.

Extra tip

Don't worry if the large leaves develop natural splits. This is a normal characteristic of Strelitzia and helps the leaves withstand wind in their natural habitat. Give your plant plenty of room to spread its foliage, rotate the pot occasionally for balanced growth and gently remove dust from the leaves to keep them looking their best.
