🌿 What’s in Your Plant Food?

🌿 What’s in Your Plant Food?

A Deep Dive into Houseplant Fertilizer and How It Works

At Plantlovers, we’re all about strong, healthy, happy plants — and while soil, light and water are essential, there's one crucial factor many houseplant owners underestimate: plant food.

Fertilizer isn’t just a “booster” — it’s a basic need. Plants grown in pots quickly deplete the nutrients in their substrate. Without regular feeding, they can slow down, fade in color, or become more vulnerable to pests and diseases.

So let’s break it down:
What is in plant food? Why does it matter? And how do you use it right — especially with special plants like variegated Monstera?

🧪 The Basics: NPK Explained

Every fertilizer label shows three numbers — ours is 8-5-6 — and they stand for:

  • N = Nitrogen (8%)
Encourages leafy growth and vibrant color. Especially important for young plants and tropical foliage.

  • P = Phosphorus (5%)
Supports healthy root systems, flowering and energy transfer within the plant.

  • K = Potassium (6%)
Strengthens overall resilience, water regulation and stress resistance. Also improves color and general plant structure.

Our fertilizer contains nitrogen in three forms: nitrate, ammonium, and urea. This means your plant gets:

  • An immediate effect (from nitrate),

  • Medium-term support (from ammonium),

  • Longer-lasting nutrition (from urea).

A slow and steady release = less chance of burning and longer-lasting results.

🧬 The Hidden Heroes: Micronutrients

Micronutrients are only needed in tiny amounts — but without them, plants struggle to function properly. Think of them as vitamins for plants.

Our formula includes:

Micronutrient What it does
Iron (Fe) Essential for chlorophyll production. Without it, leaves turn pale or yellow (especially young ones).
Zinc (Zn) Aids in hormone production and enzyme systems. Helps with leaf expansion and shoot growth.
Copper (Cu) Important for photosynthesis and enzyme function. Strengthens stems.
Manganese (Mn) Supports chlorophyll synthesis and root development. Also helps plants resist environmental stress.
Boron (B) Helps with cell wall formation and reproductive growth. Critical for new growth.
Molybdenum (Mo) Enables plants to process nitrogen. Without it, plants can’t use the nitrogen in the fertilizer.

Each of these plays a tiny but vital role in keeping your houseplants thriving — especially if you're growing variegated or slow-growing species that need a bit more support.

🕒 When and How to Use It

Here’s our greenhouse-tested guideline:

  • Frequency: Every 2 weeks during active growth (spring and summer)

  • Dosage: 10 ml per 2 liters of water

  • In winter: Reduce drastically or stop unless the plant is under grow lights and still growing

When in doubt, go with a half dose — especially for sensitive plants like Monstera variegata or Thai Constellation.

Tip: Don’t mix with cold water straight from the tap. Let water stand or use lukewarm water when adding nutrients.

⚠️ Special Note for Variegated Plants

Variegated plants like Monstera ‘Albo’ or ‘Thai Constellation’ are more delicate than their fully green counterparts:

  • The white areas on leaves contain little to no chlorophyll, meaning they can’t photosynthesize efficiently

  • Overfeeding can lead to leaf burn, especially in the white zones

  • Underfeeding, however, can cause stunted growth

So feed them modestly, consistently, and combine with bright, indirect light to maintain that beautiful contrast.

💬 Final Tips from the Greenhouse

  • Always use clean tools when mixing your fertilizer

  • Never feed a plant that is severely stressed, recently repotted, or showing signs of root rot

  • Store fertilizer in a cool, dark place and shake well before use

Our Plantlovers formula is designed for all tropical houseplants, but especially suited for:

  • Monstera (including variegated types)

  • Philodendron

  • Strelitzia

  • Alocasia and more

Curious to try it? You can find it in our webshop, but even if you use another brand — just remember: feeding is essential. Your plants will thank you.
